RIBATEJO: Ribatejo is a transitional region between the coast and the inland, between the varied landscape of Estremadura and the structure, in every way more repetitive of the Alentejo. Although the elevations are scarce, the region seems to find its borders as soon as the land start to heighten. In fact it spreads from the Serra dos andeeiros, Montejunto and Aires, down to the planes of Alentejo. It is mainly on the planes called "Leziria" alongside the river Tagus and "Bairro" on the right bank of Tagus that the vineyards are planted with grapes such as Fernão Pires, Arinto, Trincadeiras das Pratas, Alicante Branco, etc producing well balanced white wines, straw-yellow in colour and fruity. The red wines are deep in colour, full bodied, with ripe tannins but well balanced and are produced mainly from grapes such as Camarate, Periquita, Preto Martinho and Trincadeira Preta. |
