BAIRRADA:
Demarcated only in 1979, Bairrada D.O.C lies South of Oporto astride main north-south road between Oporto and Coimbra. Its history of wine making begins even before the foundation of the Portuguese Nation. Barro is Portuguese for clay, and Bairrada's name derives from this characteristic of its soil, with the best vineyards being planted on clay with a sub-structure of lime-stone. The main grape varieties are Bical and Maria Gomes producing well balanced, fruity and fresh white wines and Baga producing dark coloured, smooth with intense aroma red wines
